The recent incident of rape of a minor girl in Kaliaganj, North Dinajpur, has resulted in a massive uproar. The protests turned violent, and the police station was set on fire.
Two days later, a young man, Mrityunjay Burman, was allegedly shot dead by the police during the ongoing operation to catch the accused. BJP leader Indranil Khan filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court, demanding a CBI investigation into Burman's death.
The Chief Justice allowed the filing of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) in response to the petition.
According to local reports, the young man had stopped the police during their operation, and firing ensued, leading to his death. The local people allege that he was shot by the police, but there has been no official response yet. The incident has caused widespread unrest in Kaliaganj, and tensions have been simmering since Wednesday night.
The demand for a CBI investigation into the matter has been raised by the BJP leader, and it remains to be seen how the court will respond to this petition.
